GOOD APP: No Lock

This is the simplest app we’ve yet featured. No Lock has just the one function – disabling the swipe unlocking requirement of Android 2.x handsets.

Once installed, you stick a widget on the Home screen and use it to toggle the screen lock on and off. That’s all it does.

Basically it lets you turn your phone on and off from standby without the extra swipe. Any button press wakes it up. The extra swipe was annoying me. Now it is gone. Not good for people who pocket their phones, but ideal if your phone is mainly desk based.

Latest Build of LauncherPro Plus Brings Twitter Widget and Bug Fixes

Federico Carnales, probably one of the hardest working Android coders right now, has just released a new version of his popular homescreen replacement LauncherPro. The update to v0.7.7.2 includes a number of tweaks and bug fixes, such as improvements to the 3D app drawer which earlier sometimes would trigger involuntary long-presses.

The biggest addition, however, is for Plus users only: a Twitter widget. One of the most requested LauncherPro features was support for the HTC widgets, but since they are stored within Sense and cannot be used elsewhere, Carnales decided to make his own versions of them. There were already five widgets in LP’s arsenal: People, Bookmarks, Calendar, Messaging, and now Twitter can be added to the list.

The developer had initially planned to just make a widget that combined Twitter and Facebook, but once he started coding he decided that it would be preferable with three widgets instead: one for Twitter, one for Facebook and one Twitter/Facebook combination (such as the HTC Friends widget).

The Twitter widget looks great, is easy to configure and naturally uses the correct form of authentication unlike some other Twitter apps. Since all LauncherPro widgets can be resized, the Twitter widget comes in one size only. There are three different views: Timeline, Mentions, and Direct Messages. There is also a Compose button, and when you tap on a tweet you can reply, retweet, or send a direct message to the user.

The new widget currently has one major downside, though: the update interval is 15 minutes and cannot be changed. Future updates will luckily support a custom refresh rate, but since it ought to be a very easy option to add compared to writing the actual Twitter widget, it’s weird that he didn’t include it from the start.

One final thought: LevelUp Studio had to change the design of some of its widgets because they looked too much like HTC Sense – will Federico Carnales eventually have to do the same?

NEW APP: Mikrosonic RD3 Groovebox

We’re not usually that “into” music generation apps, but you can’t deny the tempting majesty of the below demonstration video. If you fancy making what some people would refer to as a “banging tune” on your Android phone, you might want to give Mikrosonic RD3 Groovebox app a go.

It’s a combo synth, drum machine and mixer, presented in the classic Roland style. And rather simple to use.

Looks pretty sweet. Here’s a handful of images, taken from the maker’s site:

The bad news is you need an Android 2.1 or higher phone (but that’s becoming less of an issue by the day) and it costs a small amount of money – €3.49 via the Android Market.

Android Piracy By Country

piracychart

We received an email from David Keyes at KeyesLabs today, with a detailed analysis of piracy in various countries. For those that don’t know, David is the author of the battery saving app Screebl, and the open source licensing library AAL. A true pioneer in Android app copy protection.

According to David’s data, the often used excuse of "Paid apps are not available in my country" is at least partly bogus. He has customers from countries such as Nigeria, Kuwait, and the Ukraine who have found ways of purchasing apps through the Android Market,...

WEIRD APP: Tips to Becoming Famous

Tips to Becoming Famous is no-doubt a well-meaning app, of similar type to the many advice-based spam web sites out there designed to hoover up Google spots for every conceivable search term that might come to mind. It’s basically a “think positive” e-book.

Here’s the description:

“Tips to Becoming Famous will give you all the advice you need to become that famous person you’ve always wanted to be. You’ll learn that being famous doesn’t have to mean you have some great talent. Even if you’re not a great singer or actor you can still achieve the fame you’ve been looking for”

But a $4.99 price tag? Is someone really working to the business model that people are so desperate to be famous they’ll pay $4.99 for an app containing some sincere advice about “trying very hard”?

Weird. Suddenly the idea of Steve Jobs having to give everything the Royal Two Thumbs Up before it’s allowed into the supply chain seems a little more appealing.
