In this tutorial Paul Yanez explains how to embed a font in Silverlight and shows the increase in file size that will occur when doing so.

Embedding a font is as simple as selecting the “Embed” checkbox in the text properties panel.
One thing to note when embedding the font “Myriad Pro” the xap file size becomes 831 kb.

Design and Apply a SharePoint Database Naming Convention

Posted by Chris Beckett on Dec 27, 2009 in - Droid Incredible, - Droid X, - Google Android, - android apps  | View Original Article

It must be the geek in me that craves order, but I have never liked the out-of-box database names for SharePoint 2007. SharePoint uses a somewhat large set of databases for a farm installation combining configuration, search, and content databases. If you were to setup a normal SharePoint Farm using the suggested database names, it would look like this:

  • SharePoint_ConfigN
  • SharePoint_AdminContent_<Guid>
  • SharedServicesN_DB
  • SharedServicesN_Search_DB
  • WSS_Content
  • WSS_Search_<ComputerName>

There are a few of problems with this approach that become even more obvious when you install SharePoint on a database server that hosts more than one SharePoint Farm, and mix SharePoint databases with other application databases.

Manually create SharePoint Farm Databases with PSCONFIG

Posted by Chris Beckett on Dec 27, 2009 in - Droid Incredible, - Droid X, - Google Android, - android apps  | View Original Article

A SharePoint Farm installation utilizes a number of SQL databases. A normal MOSS 2007 installation requires a minimum of six databases including configuration, search, and administration web application content databases. Over time, as organizations add sites for user content, this list can grow to many more.

The standard approach to installing a new SharePoint Farm involves running the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard at the completion of a WSS or MOSS 2007 setup program. Among other things, the configuration wizard creates the farm configuration database , and the content database for the Central Administration web application.

Unfortunately, the default names are not very user-friendly, and this can cause problems with managing our SharePoint databases. Where these problems become most relevant is when hosting multiple SharePoint farms within a single instance of SQL Server, and when mixing SharePoint databases with other applications within the same instance. It can be difficult to differentiate the SharePoint databases between the various farm instances.

The solution to this problem is to use a command-line utility included with SharePoint called PSCONFIG.EXE to provision the initial farm configuration and administrative content databases manually.

Pretty much every developer encounters situations where she needs to deal with a group of objects in a similar manner. Whether that's a set of movie clips for a game, a set of questions in a survey, or a set...

WTFramework – Detect Which Framework A Site Is Using, The Easy Way

WTFramework Summary

WTFramework is a dead simple, and well designed way to detect which framework a site is using as well as version. Being primarily a JavaScript developer I was always looking through the source to find which framework a certain site was using. Or to see if the developer had done something particularly cool with my favorite framework MooTools.

It was developed by Oskar Krawczyk and is implemented as a bookmark for any A grade browser. You simply drag it into your bookmarks bar and its installed. You can now use it on any site you visit. The notifications are “Growl” like and are very well designed.

Kudos to Oskar on this one, a dead simple, but time saving tool.

Installation

  1. Visit The Site
  2. Drag the big red icon into your bookmarks.
  3. It is now installed.

Fortunately For Us

Oskar has a public Git Hub repository for this. So if needs be you can change it to suit your needs.

Voice over IP on a Cell Phone? The Nexus One from Google is here.

Posted by Al on Dec 27, 2009 in - Dotnet  | View Original Article

What about changing how cell phones communicate with each other? What about moving away from GSM and CDMA and just use your Wi-Fi or data connection like 3G or 4G to make Voice Over the Internet calls?

The Google phone with Android OS is coming out, their name it Nexus One, guess will also be Nexus Two some day. A few rumors are running around the Internet about the usability of the device itself. Google has been trying to push Google Voice to other devices, the way to use a phone better then any existing platform out there; now, with the release of Nexus One, they may have an advantage to just let you buy a phone without any affiliation to any carrier. What means for you? Probably a very expensive device ‘cos you don’t need a contract, yet means to be able to select your carrier.

Now what plan does it require? If Google can get away with it, you’ll only need a data plan, no need for any minutes, the phone will use your data plan to make and receive phone calls. Are we too early for something like that? I personally think so, carriers make their money in the minutes, not much on a flat data plan.

Is this the way to lower you monthly cell phone charge? And the best question of all for iPhone users stuck with AT&T. Is now finally Apple will see that they need to unlock the iPhone with other carriers?

Without any doubt the Google Nexus One, can be a game changer for all  in the market, now. Where in the market the Apple Table “iSlate coming out with 3G fits? New Amazon Kindle or a really big iPhone? Can I share my 3G from my iPhone with my Apple Table?

Those 2 devices will be a topic of conversation for many of us on 2010. Like the iPhone will start seeing them around, and like the iPhone the price will also mark the acceptance of those.

How much will you pay for the Google Nexus One? What about the Apple Table?

Cheers

Al

Why Defining ‘Cloud Computing’ Is Important

Posted by Latest News from Cloud Computing Journal on Dec 27, 2009 in - General, - Technology News, CLoud Computing  | View Original Article
It seems like every major vendor out there from hardware to software has a different definition of what cloud computing is. I’ve dabbled a little with the definition on here before, but it still seems like there is a general lack of consensus when it comes to definition. With that said, does the definition matter much? Isn’t the business value of the cloud more important than the strict definition? Of course the value is more important, but the definition can have implications with respect to understanding and quantifying that value for your business.
