Desktop wallpapers can serve as an excellent source of inspiration. However, if you use some specific wallpaper for a long period of time, it becomes harder to draw inspiration out of it. That’s why we have decided to supply you with smashing wallpapers over 12 months. And to make them a little bit more distinctive from the usual crowd, we’ve decided to embed calendars for the upcoming month. So if you need to look up some date, isn’t it better to show off a nice wallpaper with a nice calendar instead of launching some default time application?

This post features 35 free desktop wallpapers, created by designers across the globe. Both versions with a calendar and without a calendar can be downloaded for free.

Please notice:

  • all images can be clicked and lead to the preview of the wallpaper;
  • you can feature your work in our magazine by taking part in our desktop wallpaper calendar series. We are regularly looking for creative designers and artists to be featured on Smashing Magazine. Are you one of them?

So what wallpapers have we received for January 2010?

A Fresh Beginning

The girl whispered, to the earth, ìthank you for a fresh beginning.î At that moment the sun begins to shine on the east." Designed by April Joy E. Jasmin from Philippines.

New Beginnings

"A new year means, well….new? So that’s why I wanted to try something new. I have always loved the vector art I find all the internet and finally decided its about time to prove to myself that I can do that too. This piece is all about feeling, subconscious and conscious. I can’t believe how the slightest change in the curves or colors affected my sense of flow and for that reason I spent an unbelievable amount of time perfecting the flow of the piece ever so meticulously. Here’s to going from an old 2009 (red) to a fresh 2010 (blue)." Designed by Saidur Hossain from USA.

Headers and Footers that Grab You Coming and Going

Posted by gmuller on Dec 31, 2009 in Design & Graphics, Silver Light  | View Original Article

Headers and footers are always a big concern in web design. These two powerful sections of a website hold great importance and are always something to worry about when designing a page. The header is the first thing the user will see when opening the page, so they must be perfect. The footer, in the other hand, was for a long time something not much appreciated, it was a section of the website almost forgotten. Lately this reality change a bit and we can find amazing footers… filled with cool information, social connections and other stuff. These days headers and footers actually show us some new and cool trends, typography and unique styles.

Here you will see a selection of great examples of headers and footers. Some are colorful, some are minimalist, others are informative and many of them are very creative, so check them out and get some inspiration.

Marketing support

Posted by Pete Foster on Dec 31, 2009 in Green Computing, Silver Light  | View Original Article

The Green IT Report offers a range of services to help ICT companies get their green message across to clients and prospects:

Green ICT company profiles. These in-depth analyses can help you demonstrate your sustainability credentials. They are based on face-to-face discussions, backed up by detailed knowledge and informed comment and can be seen by your customers and prospects via The Green IT Review news and views blog. Each profile covers:

  - Company background

  - Approach to green IT

  - Internal corporate actions

  - Market offerings – products and services

  - Strategy and performance

  - The Green IT Report's independent, critical assessment.

Coming soon: the profiles will soon also include an objective assessment across six aspects of green IT, so readers can make direct comparisons between you and your industry peers.

White papers. In what is still an immature market, you can use white papers to educate and inform people about issues and trends and to highlight the benefits of your products and services. You can combine white papers with a Green ICT company profile to convey a powerful corporate message.

Customer case studies. In this new and dynamic market, you can use case studies effectively to show how your products and services are being used and how they are benefitting customers.

Research/consulting

Posted by Pete Foster on Dec 31, 2009 in Green Computing, Silver Light  | View Original Article

The Green IT Report can help ICT suppliers and investors understand the impact of environmental issues and the opportunities they represent. Our market research and consultancy services include:

Competitive benchmarking. We can compare your organisation directly with your industry peers, either using our existing profiling methodology and assessment metrics (see Marketing support) or a custom process to fit your needs. We will back this up by a SWOT analysis and provide an objective viewpoint.

The Green IT Readiness Index. This powerful methodology assesses how green an IT operation is. Using a Capability Maturity Model (CMM), we can assess organisations across five aspects of green IT: end user efficiencies, enterprise IT efficiencies, lifecycle and procurement, measurement and monitoring, and enabling the business. Developed by Connection Research, the methodology has been widely applied in Australia and is now being used by IT suppliers in the UK to help their customers achieve their green IT goals.

A go-to-market assessment. This looks at your company’s current market positioning and perception and your focus on specific opportunities in the green ICT sector.

Workshops and presentations. We can develop educational sessions on the current state of the green ICT market, competitive landscape and/or other aspects of the market, tailored to your company’s needs.

Identifying partners. Since Green ICT requires specific expertise, you cannot be expected to have the breadth of experience to address all the opportunities. So partnering will be important. The Green IT Report can help you identify suitable partners and assess their green ICT capabilities.

Training

Posted by Pete Foster on Dec 31, 2009 in Green Computing, Silver Light  | View Original Article

The Green IT Report offers two courses for IT suppliers and users.

Green IT Fundamentals is designed to help delegates understand and appreciate the need for green IT and provide a framework for action within their own organisations. It is ideal for helping ICT suppliers and users to educate and train ICT staff and can also help ICT suppliers to open a dialogue with their customers and prospects.

The course covers:

• What is green IT and why do we need it? Understanding the pressures and benefits.

• A green IT framework for action:

- End user efficiencies

- Enterprise IT efficiencies

- Lifecycle and procurement

- IT as a low-carbon enabler

• Assessing existing operations – using the green IT report card

• Next steps - developing a green ICT strategy

Green IT Process and Practice provides the background to green IT, but using behavioural economic theory it also gives an insight into how actions can be implemented to achieve support throughout the organisation. Applying rules alone may not be sufficient to achieve the sorts of targets that ICT departments need to aim for. This course, which will be available soon, helps delegates bridge the gap. Suitable for IT managers and for ICT suppliers to offer to clients as part of a green ICT service offering.

The course covers:

• Why go green? Pressures and benefits

• How ICT can help. A green IT framework for action (as above).

• Changing behaviour to achieve green objectives

• Practical solutions

• Next steps – a roadmap to green ICT success

To discuss your requirements call +44 1442 891419 or email me at pete.foster@thegreenitreport.com.
